Buy Cigarettes Online in Canada: A Guide
Adults can buy cigarettes online in Canada by the carton, from native and GRE brands to national labels. Here's how ordering, age checks, delivery and shipping actually work.
The short answer: adults who meet their province's minimum age can buy cigarettes online in Canada and have them delivered or shipped to their door. At White Birch Post you order by the carton from our store in Capreol, with same-day delivery in Greater Sudbury on orders placed before the daily cut-off and tracked Canada Post shipping everywhere else in Canada except Nunavut.
This guide walks through the whole process — what kinds of cigarettes you can order, how age checks work, how payment and delivery are handled, and the small details that trip people up the first time, like PO boxes and how your province is set. If you already know you want native cigarettes specifically, our guide to buying native cigarettes online in Ontario goes deeper on that category.
What kinds of cigarettes can you buy online?
Online tobacco stores in Canada generally sort cigarettes into a few groups. At White Birch Post the whole range sits under Cigarettes, split into four sections:
Native brand cigarettes
Made by First Nations manufacturers. Native cigarettes are produced by independent First Nations-owned companies, mostly in Ontario and Quebec. Brands such as Deerfield, Canadian Goose, Rolled Gold and Yellowstone are in our Native Brand section. They're sold in packs and cartons, just like national brands.
Brand-name cigarettes
The national labels. These are the brands sold at convenience stores across the country — Du Maurier, Player's, Export A, Canadian Classics and others. Nearly all of them are made by three large companies; our guide to who makes Canada's cigarette brands breaks down which brand belongs to which.
GRE cigarettes
From Grand River Enterprises. GRE is a First Nations manufacturer on the Six Nations of the Grand River in southern Ontario. Its brands are technically native cigarettes, but the lineup is well known enough that we list it on its own under GRE. Read GRE cigarettes explained for the background.
Bagged cigarettes
Native cigarettes without the packs. Bagged cigarettes come loose in a resealable bag instead of individual packs inside a carton box. See bagged cigarettes explained for how they differ from a carton.
If you're weighing native against brand-name, native vs brand-name cigarettes covers the practical differences without repeating them here.
Is it legal to buy cigarettes online in Canada?
Adults can order tobacco from Canadian retailers online, but the same age rules apply as in a store, and sellers are prohibited from selling or sending tobacco to young people. The minimum age depends on your province or territory — 19 in Ontario and most of the country, 18 in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec, and 21 in Prince Edward Island. White Birch Post sells to adults 19 and over only, and you also have to meet the minimum age where you live.
Our guide to tobacco age verification in Canada explains how age checks work for online orders and what ID is accepted at the door.
How does ordering cigarettes online work?
The process is the same whether you're across town or across the country:
- Confirm your age. You'll confirm you're 19 or older before you can shop.
- Choose your brand and variety. Most brands come in more than one variety and in regular or king size. Each product page lists exactly what's in stock today, so choose from what's shown rather than what you remember from a corner store.
- Add cartons to your cart. Cigarettes are sold by the carton. Many customers order several cartons at once so they're not reordering every week.
- Enter your address. Start typing and pick your address from the suggestions. If you have a PO box or rural route, use the "PO Box / rural route" option to enter it by hand.
- Pay by credit card. Online orders accept all major credit cards.
- Receive your order. Local orders are delivered by our own driver, who checks ID at the door. Everything else ships by Canada Post.
Why buy cigarettes by the carton online?
For people who already smoke, the reasons are mostly practical:
- Selection. A single online store can carry native, GRE and brand-name ranges side by side, which few corner stores do.
- Fewer trips. Ordering a carton or more at a time means fewer runs to the store, which matters in rural Northern Ontario and anywhere the nearest shop is a drive away.
- Knowing what's in stock. Product pages show the varieties on the shelf, so you're not stuck with whatever the gas station has left.
- Clear pricing. Every product page shows the current carton price, so you can compare brands directly. Prices move with taxes and supply, which is why we don't quote them in guides.
How fast can I get cigarettes delivered?
It depends on where you live.
Greater Sudbury: same-day delivery
If your address is in Greater Sudbury — Capreol, Hanmer, Val Caron, Chelmsford, Lively, Coniston, Garson or the city itself — orders placed before the daily cut-off can be delivered the same day. The current cut-off is shown on our homepage and at checkout. Our guide to tobacco delivery in Greater Sudbury covers the local service in detail.
Everywhere else in Canada: tracked shipping
Orders outside Greater Sudbury ship from our Capreol store by Canada Post Xpresspost, in discreet packaging. Transit time depends on where you are, so we don't promise delivery dates; your tracking shows each step. Our guide to shipping tobacco across Canada covers provinces, PO boxes and tracking.
Where can't cigarettes be shipped?
- Nunavut. We don't ship to Nunavut, and orders with a Nunavut address can't be completed.
- Outside Canada. We ship within Canada only.
Your province is set automatically from your postal code. Canadian postal codes identify the province, so there's no province drop-down to fill in — and no way to pick the wrong one by accident.
What should I check before I order?
- The variety and size. Regular and king size are different products, and not every brand comes in both.
- Your address. Picking a suggested address avoids typos. For a PO box, double-check the box number and postal code.
- Someone 19+ to receive it. Local deliveries are only handed to someone who can show valid government-issued photo ID.
- Storage. If you're buying several cartons, keep them somewhere cool and dry. Our guide on how to store tobacco has the details.
Can I return cigarettes bought online?
Tobacco is final sale, so we don't offer refunds or exchanges. If a package goes missing, contact us and we'll reship it. Tracking is available on request — email our store team if your tracking isn't updating. More answers are on our FAQ page.
Can I pick up instead?
Our store is at 359 Taighwenini Trail Rd in Capreol, open Monday to Sunday, 10am to 9pm, and closed only on Christmas Day. In-store purchases are cash only, with an ATM on site. Online orders are paid by credit card.
Regular or king size: what's the difference?
Cigarettes in Canada come in two main lengths. Regular (sometimes called standard) is the shorter of the two, and king size is longer. Many brands offer both, and on our site they're listed as separate options on the same product page. If you're replacing a brand you buy in town, check the length on your current pack before you order — it's the most common mix-up we see, and since tobacco is final sale, it's worth getting right the first time.
The bottom line
Buying cigarettes online in Canada is straightforward if you're of legal age: pick your brand, confirm your age, and choose delivery or shipping. Browse the full range in Cigarettes, or start from the shop to see everything we carry.
White Birch Post sells to adults 19 and over only. Smoking is harmful to your health. If you're thinking about cutting back or quitting, our responsible use page lists free Canadian support services.
