Who Makes Canada's Cigarette Brands? A Manufacturer Guide
Du Maurier, Player's, Export A, Belmont, Rothmans — most of Canada's cigarette brands come from just three companies. Here's which brand belongs to which, plus where native and GRE brands fit.
The short answer: nearly every brand-name cigarette sold in Canada is made by one of three companies — Imperial Tobacco Canada, Rothmans, Benson & Hedges, or JTI-Macdonald. Native and GRE brands come from independent First Nations manufacturers.
Imperial Tobacco Canada
Imperial Tobacco Canada is the largest tobacco company in the country and part of the British American Tobacco group. Its brands include:
Rothmans, Benson & Hedges (RBH)
Rothmans, Benson & Hedges is the Canadian affiliate of Philip Morris International. Its brands include:
JTI-Macdonald
JTI-Macdonald is the Canadian arm of Japan Tobacco International, with roots in Montreal going back more than a century. Its brands include:
Grand River Enterprises (GRE)
Grand River Enterprises is a First Nations manufacturer on the Six Nations of the Grand River in southern Ontario, and one of the best-known native cigarette makers in the country. We group GRE brands in their own GRE section, including Putters, DK's and Sago.
Native brands
Many other native brands come from smaller First Nations manufacturers. They include dM, Canadian Goose, Rolled Gold, Deerfield and Yellowstone. See the full list in our Native Brand section, or read native vs brand-name cigarettes for how the two compare.
